There are many things one could get up to with a database of nearly 3000 farts – and here at the College we intend to leave no stone unturned.
Inspired by projects such as This Person Does Not Exist we have created an interactive Fart Maker that seeks to generate new farts by creatively combining existing farts. We already know that fart sounds are made up of different combinations of other fart sounds. This suggests that even random combinations of existing farts should yield new and exciting farts.
The Fart Maker features four user-settable properties: Duration, Richness, Texture, and Tail – which we will explore below – and a Copy feature which allows newly created farts to be shared.
Duration. This value represents the maximum total time of the generated fart in seconds, and defaults to 2.5 seconds. Values range from 0.25 seconds (a very short fart indeed!) and 5 seconds (these are often comprised of farts that feature multiple components, as described here).
Richness. The slider governs the number of farts used in the generation process. The low-end is not all that interesting, as only a single fart is being used. At the high-end 10 farts are used and often produce a garbled and uninteresting result. We tend to get good results with values in the middle, however we encourage experimentation and look forward to feedback.
Texture. This slider controls the time range below the duration that will be used for determining which farts will serve as candidates for the generated fart. The value represents a percentage of the duration. For example, if duration is set to 2 seconds and texture is set to 10, then all farts that feature a duration of between 1.8 seconds and 2 seconds will be included. Increasing this value to 50 will include farts with a duration of between 1.0 and 2 seconds.
Tail Duration. This slider controls a single extra fart of between 0 and 1000 milliseconds that will play at the end of the primary fart.
Tail Gap. This slider controls the time-gap between the primary fart and the tail. It can be set to a value of between 0 and 1000 milliseconds.
Copy. In order to share generated farts, press the Copy button and then paste the copied text into an email, social media post, text message, or other platform of your choice.
In a future update we plan to add a rating feature as well as a gallery of ‘best farts’. In the meantime, here are a few good quality samples:
