April 7, 2022 marked the one-year anniversary of the smelliest fart ever recorded. According to our best estimate, the fart reached an astonishing 890 ppm of VOCs, nearly double the dose of hydrogen sulfide that would be considered lethal to humans. To mark the occasion, we conducted a brief interview with DickPound1, a member of the College and the source of the fart.
Benengeli: First of all, congratulations on being the author of the smelliest fart ever measured.
DickPound: Thanks very much.
Benengeli: How does it feel to have produced the smelliest documented fart in human history?
DickPound: Honestly, I’m still processing it.
Benengeli: Do you remember what you did in the hours leading up to the record-setting fart?
DickPound: I ate a large breakfast and then went for a long drive with two members of the Bolshoi Ballet. I was holding in my farts the entire time. When I got out of the car, I could tell that something remarkable was going on.
Benengeli: Let’s listen to the fart together:
How does it feel to hear it again after more than a year?
DickPound: I remember it like it was yesterday. We were celebrating Jackie Chan’s 67th birthday, having a wonderful evening, and I recall feeling like absolutely anything was possible.
Benengeli: Who would you say were your main influences? Is there anyone in particular whom you admire?
DickPound: Joan of Arc and Bert Campaneris come to mind.
Benengeli: Do you think your record will ever be broken?
DickPound: I hope so. I really do. There is so much that we can learn from farts, and I would like to think that the people, young people especially, will keep striving to produce more and better data.
Benengeli: What message would you like people to take away from your achievement?
DickPound: Occasions for defining moments do not arise every day. When they do, we must seize the opportunities they present for improving everyone’s life.
1 It has come to our attention that there is a Canadian hockey commentator2 named Richard Pound. He is not a member of our college, and we know nothing about the smelliness of his farts. (-ed.)
2 He is actually a swimmer3. (-Benengeli)
3 According to Wikipedia, he was a wrestler (-ed.)
